Another attraction located on this square is the Lviv Regional Puppet Theater. In the basement of the same building, the Lyalka club, which was the center of Lviv's rock culture, functioned for many years. At different times, almost all famous rock bands of western Ukraine performed here. The highlight of the square can be considered the monument to Yuriy Kulchytskyi, a Ukrainian nobleman, the author of the Viennese coffee recipe.During the Middle Ages, the third outer belt of city fortifications with boulevards (bastions) — Nizhky and Korolivsky — passed on the site of the current square. Below them flowed a stream that had its origin on the slopes of Zamkova Gora. A shooting range was arranged between the outer wall and the rampart, where the townspeople learned to shoot bows and firearms. That is why later the square that arose on the site of ramparts and walls was named Strzelecki (Polish: plac Strzelecki). However, this officially happened only after the magistrate ordered the names of Lviv streets and squares in 1871. The previous name of the square was Holzmarkt (German: Holzmarkt) because it was the place where the firewood for heating city buildings was located. |
